Chapter 8: The Thief
“I think we should name it,” said Xana. She and Peter were sitting cross-legged on the bed, looking at the little dragon. “Since we don’t know whether it’s a boy or a girl, we have to pick a name that’s gender-neutral.”
Peter rolled his eyes. He had more important things to think about than coming up with a stupid name, like figuring out what they were going to do with it. The baby dragon needed to get back to its mother, and fast.
I wish Dominick was here. He’d know what to do.
At the thought of his uncle, Peter’s stomach clenched remembering his uncle’s shouts for Peter to run, the crack of a gunshot. He pushed the thoughts away. Right now, there was nothing he could do but move forward. Dominick would want him to help the baby dragon, to get it back to its mother. But how?
Santiago! He’d know what to do.
“How about ‘Crimson’?” Xana twirled a piece of hair between her fingers while she eyed the dragon. “You know, because of the red. Is that too girly? Maybe something with fire. Like . . . Blaze?”
“Xana,” Peter said, “we’re not naming it. Seriously.” He swung his legs over the side of the bed and stood up. “There’s someone I need to contact,” he said. “Does this place have Internet?”
“What, you don’t like Blaze? Okay, how about Raspberry or—”
“Xana!”
“Razzy!”
She smirked at him, and he shook his head. “Not Razzy, and not anything else. Did you hear what I said? About the Internet?”
“Sheesh!” Xana swung her legs over the side of the bed and glared at Peter. “Why are you being such a spoilsport? Anyhow, like I said—there’s nothing to do here. It’s part of the charm, supposedly. No computers, no Internet, no TV—”
“Then I need to get to a town,” Peter said. “There’s someone I need to find. If I can get to a computer with Internet, I can look him up.”
“That, we can do,” Xana said. She picked up the small telephone beside the bed and pushed a button, then said, “Hi, I need a car to take me to town.”
Peter looked at the little dragon, curled up in a ball in the center of the bed. They needed a way to carry it and keep it hidden. “Hey, Xana, grab my backpack,” he said.
She glared at him. “Grab it yourself.”
Just ignore her, Peter told himself as he zipped open the backpack and set it on the bed. He turned to the dragon. “We need to get you inside, little guy.”
The little dragon looked nervously at the open backpack and started to back away.
Peter reached his hand out to block the dragon, and it turned and scampered toward the edge of the bed. Peter dived across the bed as the dragon teetered on the edge, but he was a second too late. It fell, legs flailing, and hit the tile floor with a thud where it sat stunned for a second before scampering toward the far side of the room.
